Unsung Sporting Hero of the Week Of the 28 names already - TopicsExpress

Unsung Sporting Hero of the Week Of the 28 names already decorating the “Unsung Heroes” Board, only Archie Moore has been attributed with a “Double-Sport” proposal. Archie was nominated with a tag for both Rugby and Cricket. This week’s announcement pulls Billy Shaw on to Centre Stage and his selection comes with a Triple-Connection…….Rugby, Football and Cricket. It is indeed pertinent and befitting that Billy’s important and sizeable contribution to local sport should be recognised by a threefold designation. Although currently Billy does not have any strong connection with the football scene, he did contribute much as a player back in the 50s and 60s. He was a regular and influential member of the Ards Town side which won the Amateur League Division 2C Championship in 1956 - 1957 and, three seasons previous to that outstanding achievement, he gained Youth International selection for Northern Ireland. The cap he received for his international call-up in season 1953 - 1954 is actually featured in a Drome Park collection in the Public Area at the Club. Billy has also made a sterling and weighty contribution to local cricket - and continues to provide valuable input to the fortunes of Ards Cricket Club. He captained the senior side for eight separate seasons, has held the positions of both Secretary and Treasurer and maintains a lively and substantial role around the Club to this day. In the Rugby setting too Billy has played an ample and marked part both as a player and an administrator, and still occupies a positive and guiding standing at Hamilton Park where he is a committed Committee member of the FARLS (Friends of Ards Rugby Lunch Society). Billy Shaw has had decades of involvement in a wide spectrum of the local sporting scene and his addition to the “Sporting Snippets” Hall of Fame is justified and rightly due.
