Update: 8/9, 11:00 p.m.: Butch has had another eventful day - in a good way. He walked quite a distance, sat in the chair the rest of the day and has been breathing on his own all day as well. He has the same nurse as last night, who came in and was genuinely upset and sorry about what happened this morning. When they put him back on the ventilator for the night, they are going to check the alarms. It SHOULD have been obnoxious enough to awaken me and alert those at the nurses station. He assured us that this wont happen again - I have confidence that this is the case. Butch feels much better and more safe. Im not sure I will sleep very soundly, however. I dont want to miss it if he is in trouble again. The funny note of the day - he has chosen to get my attention through blowing raspberries. It is quite funny, actually. However, it has been made clear by me that as soon as he has his voice back, this will be an unacceptable method of getting my attention. Knowing him, thats all the information he needs.......
