Update Monday (10.6.14) 11:00pm Shelly had a follow up with her primary care physician today. He is our family doctor, so he takes care of my dad, brother, sister, myself, and even Rylan. It was great catching up with him about Shellys plan. He has done an awesome job of researching all that has been involved with Shelly and Rylan. Not to mention my couple of visits for migraines over the past month. We feel confident that the plan that is laid out for Shelly is the correct one for us to walk right now. It is a great feeling when you pull in multiple, educated opinions and they all seem to be drawing the same conclusion. I feel like we are really getting ahead of the curve. Speaking of ahead of the curve, Shelly decided to use our visit to start the conversation about procedures to protect us from this happening in the future. After all she has been through this month, I will happily go under the knife to ensure that we do not venture down this road again. Tomorrow begins our outpatient rehab schedule. We have two evaluations lined up for this week. What I most excited about? Our rehab location is at the office that is housed in my YMCA. I will be able to sneak back into work some while Shelly works on her goals. I have always been a workaholic, so this absence from work feels so odd. This is by far the longest I have been without working in almost two decades. I started working for Food Lion when is was fifteen, and I have not been without at least a part-time job since that point. I can count on my hands the amount of one week vacations I have taken over the years. I even worked for the Y full time while I was a full time student at Catawba. Work is what I do. As a teacher, when I had summers off, I worked multiple part-time jobs to try and get ahead. I am so thankful for all God has done to allow me this time off of work. There are so many people that go through situations like ours and are not allowed the opportunity to just be with each other. Thank you God. Finances have always been a stress for me in life. You dont pursue a career in education or the non-profit sector looking to get rich. We have always had to make smart choices. And we learned valuable lessons from the poor decisions we made in life involving money. We are thankful that we did our homework when we discovered Shelly was pregnant and lined up a solid insurance plan. We are extremely thankful to be surrounded by family and friends that are helping to make sure everything stays in tact. And of course we are thankful for the amount of love we have received from the community and friends of friends through donations. One of the challenges that I faced early on in this process was checking my pride at the door and acknowledging that I would not be able to do this by myself. Allowing others to assist financially is a humbling experience, but a blessing that I can not describe adequately. For once in my life I wake up only worried about my wife and family. No thoughts of work, career, or my individual professional goals. Most men work a life time to enjoy a moment like that, I received it through Gods grace and I will not take it for granted. Tonight, as I type this post with one hand and console my fussy little girl with the other, I acknowledge the many blessings that God has placed in my life. I am humbled by His grace and mercy, and I am most thankful for His love. We are thankful for all the love.
