Update: #RUBYPH #Hagupit Philippines on Alert for Strengthening Tropical Storm Hagupit AccuWeather meteorologists have identified two scenarios for Hagupit. Both scenarios are typical with tropical systems that form in this region and would support Hagupit becoming a powerful typhoon with maximum sustained winds of 185 kph (115 mph) or greater. The first scenario would be a more westerly track, bringing the cyclone into the southern or central Philippines this weekend and in contact with a much more significant population. The impacts [in this scenario] would be quite severe with damaging typhoon winds, pounding surf, inundating storm surge and flooding rain, stated AccuWeather Meteorologist Anthony Sagliani. The danger for flooding would become extreme and more life-threatening if Hagupit slows its forward movement and crawls through the Philippines, unloading inundating amounts of rain. Mudslides would also be a serious concern. The Philippines, however, would be spared of all but rough surf if the second scenario of Hagupit unfolds. This scenario takes the cyclone northward through the Philippine Sea, then northeastward in the Northwest Pacific Ocean. Depending on how sharp of a turn Hagupit takes, the Volcano Islands could be threatened or impacts could be felt along the southern coast of Japan next week. All interests from the Philippines to Japan should closely monitor the progress of what will become a dangerous typhoon.
