Update for Friday, 8/22. It has been 6 days since the accident and Thomas is still in critical condition. This morning, the trauma doctors are doing three procedures which should help him in the long run. His condition may not improve as quickly as we hoped, so they are trying to do things to improve his care: 1. They are going to perform a tracheostomy to replace the intubation tubes. This will remove the tubes which are near his vocal cords and potentially ease his transition when being removed from the respirator. 2. They are going to place an inferior vena cava filter. Basically, they are placing a filter in the large vein in the abdomen that returns blood from the lower body to the heart. This will lower the risk of blood clots that may develop in his legs or pelvis to break up and travel to his lungs. 3. They are doing a gastrostomy, which is a feeding tube inserted through the skin and the stomach wall, directly into the stomach. As for his neurological condition, as of 9:30 this morning, there was no change. Please continue to keep Thomas in your prayers. We know God can bring him through to a complete recovery and your prayers are helping get him there.
