Update on Dorchester 2 School Board meeting on Common Core Standards: Lasts nights Dorchester 2 School Board meeting on Common Core Standards was very educational for those who were not informed about the Common Core Standards. Sheri Few of (SCPIE) South Carolina Parents Involved in Educations and Whitney Neal of FreedomsWorks did an outstand job of explaining the controversial issues of Common Core. Whitney Neal spoke for 30 minutes and Sheri Few spoke for about 10 minutes. At the very end of the meeting they were given less than 10 minutes to rebut the pros of Common Core Standards. The Assistant Superintendent Dr. Alvord (pro Common Core) was in control of the meeting and he invited Kevin Baird from Achieve3000 and Center for College and Career Readiness Announce Partnership. Kevin Baird and his organization are also tied to The Common Core Institute. Kevin spoke for over an hour with questions and answers at the end. Kevin Baird was misleading the school board members during his Q&A. One of the board members asked Baird if SC will be able to choose their own curriculum. He said that SC would have numerous options to other text books. I believe this is something that we have heard before: “If you like your doctor you can keep your doctor”. What Kevin forgot to mention was that SC has already signed on to the Smarter Balance Assessment Consortium. You may have a large menu to choose from, but all the text books will be based on the Common Core curriculum. Center for College and Career Readiness is Common Core in a brand new shiny package - "repackaged". Kevin Baird’s funding does come from a lot of places, so he can say he does not get federal money, his money comes from schools and other people as he is just a consultant now hired to present CCSS in that shiny new paint job!
