Update on Funduela..Day one.. Yes the first thing to say is it is horrific..how could any animal lover leave it in this mess..we arrived at the shelter wit...h Rudi and Gabriella around 5.30pm after landing, we were restricted on what we could do due to losing day light at 6pm but we had a chance to assess the situation and the degree of misery...and yes there is lots.. These poor creatures have no fresh air as its enclosed in a barn and no windows, the windows that are there have plastic guards so no air can escape or come through.. The smell of ammonia and stale air is very potent. The dogs did not even get up to greet us and if anyone who knows dogs will tell you most in shelters will crave some contact but the feeling of these dogs is that they have given up.. Its heartbreaking. We looked at these dogs and then Gabriella said this is not be worse.. Through a wooden door is a small enclosure with wire cages and wet concrete floor, no drainage. And there the sorrow and smell of ammonia hits you like a lorry. When you look into the eyes of the dogs in there you know they have no hope and no enjoyment of life..I cry as I am writing this as the memory is haunting. There are no windows and bless the Romanian workers they had to smash through the concrete wall today to make some ventilation to help. This I am told has made a huge difference. On a positive note the work that has been done so far by the Romanian good guys, who came to help is amazing, the dogs have water and food and the cages are being cleaned. There were 20 dogs to a small pen until these guys sorted and let some free to ease the overcrowding. So there has been great improvements in a short time. The plan.. Gabriella and Rudi the amazing vet who beg borrowed all his contacts today to get me medical supplies due to the wholesalers being closed on weekends.. Will spend tonight speaking to builders etc who will make a fence around the hell hole and so the dogs can be free in the air and roam and start to know that humans are not all arseholes.. This will make a massive difference to their mental welfare and the improvements will be drastic and we can start to feel some hope. So tomorrow the plan is to get the fence built, treat the poorly dogs and there are many and try and give some support and love to the team here who are awesome. Weve been asked what the people in the UK can do to help, Im afraid its financial support, everyone wants to get paid, they threaten to concrete the water well so no water supply if the contractors who were promised payment by the previous owners are not paid.. The fence will need to be funded and continued food and medical support. The medical have started and will continue until all are well.. I hope this gives you a small insight into the situation and what these poor are up against.. Can I just say that if you have adopted a Romanian stray may you know what you did for that dog, its been saved in every sense of the word from Romania, maybe consider a few more and spread the word to all possible.
