Update on Strike! As I commented on an earlier post, on - TopicsExpress

Update on Strike! As I commented on an earlier post, on Tuesday, August 20th, I took Strike in for a checkup, blood work and to meet Dr. Grabowski of Cats Exclusive Clinic. That day, Strike! was given another Convenia antibiotic shot and we picked up some Petinic pet vitamin supplement. After the results of the blood work came in I met with the doctor to discuss a plan for getting Strikes health to a good place. The results showed that while Strike’s liver has healed and his red blood cell count has greatly improved, we have a problem when it comes to his kidney health. When I first found Strike, he was severely dehydrated and most likely suffering from Acute Kidney Injury, probably due to one or more of the issues that he was confronting on a daily basis out on the streets (infections, lack of adequate drinking water sources, FIV, possible exposure to toxic chemicals, maybe even early symptoms of Feline Kidney Disease). To combat the malnutrition and anemia, Strike! has been on a very nutritious and rich diet of protein and fats, and while his general health has continued to improve over the last few weeks the kidneys have taken a beating while trying to process all that protein. Strike’s blood work has guided us in another direction now. Seeing how Strike! has been able to recover from his malnourished state, we have re-prioritized our objectives and have switched him to a low protein diet in order to try to take a load off the kidneys. He has also been put on Azodyl (a probiotic that helps breakdown uremic toxins that settle in the gut) and Epakitin (a calcium based supplement that is said to bind phosphorus, which is a big problem when it comes to compromised kidney health). Right now we are on a holding pattern with Strike! We are waiting to see how much his kidney levels will be affected and improve with this diet and supplementation. If they come down to an acceptable level, he can go under the knife. The situation with the eye has improved greatly. The swelling has gone away and he is left with an eye that, although useless, is nonetheless alive and without much if any swelling or infection. The sore on the left side of his neck is slowly healing as well. If anyone wants to spend some time with the lovely and charismatic fur-ball that is Strike! Please let me know so we can arrange it. – Christian M.
