Update on beautiful Mbali! This coming Friday will be 4 weeks since Janine and I plucked Mbali from the dying hens box. Mbali was severely dehydrated, underweight and had a broken tibia. I have been nursing her for 3 1/2 weeks with a full body bandage. This has meant, cleaning her, keeping bandage dry, giving her various supplements, making sure she drank enough and adequate pain management, carrying her in and out of the house and watching her toes on broken leg for unusual swelling. Mbali has really shown herself to be a tenacious and strong hen with a strong will to live. However, I noticed from Thursday that she was both distressed and listless, not eating. Our appointment for bandage removal was set up for yesterday. I phoned our veterinary practice, but was unable to get hold of our vet. I was advised to hold tight till Tuesday. I wanted to get that bandage off, something had changed underneath there. I was afraid if I left the bandage we let her suffer, if we didnt remove it, we missed something vital. Eventually with the support of another Rehabber, I decided to remove the bandage. The splint had moved and was digging into her side. I have kept her cage confined while she slowly starts to build her leg again, and its happening slowly! Our vet confirmed telephonically yesterday that this was the right move. If you have a hunch that somethings not right, or not making sense with your animals, check it out! I look forward to sharing Mbalis full recovery with you xxx
