Update to yesterday: I ran against a really strong competitor and tried to keep pace with him going up the tower he was about half a floor above me at the top. The rope pull went very well for me and the descent saw me gaining on the fellow. The forcible entry stage went extremely well for me and I took off around the hydrants… then I pulled the charged hose line and towards the end of that run was starting to feel the usual tired but still was good. I came into Randy around 1:25-1:30 which was perfect for what I was trying to accomplish, which was another PB of around 2:00-2:10. (Have to look again at the video when I get it) I picked up Rescue Randy and immediately felt my right hand slipping so I did the unthinkable… I set him down and reset my hands… almost immediately my hand slipped again… went a few feet more… dropped him… pick him up a few feet… dropped him… repeated this cycle three more times then fell… got up quick tried to pick him up again did the same thing… a few feet drop… oh I was mad!!! My hand kept slipping off… By this time I was completely and totally spent… I continued down the course to the finish and barely made it across the finish line with the worst time ever 3:44. To be honest I almost gave up at the halfway point for the Randy pull. It was horribly painful but I couldnt bear to see the results with a DNF (did not finish next to my name). A few races later ( I was in the early group Race 28) they changed the tape on Rescue Randy as many competitors where saying the same thing This Randy is slippery. But that is not an excuse. I have to change my technique and lift him differently. Those who lifted as I lift struggled or dropped him but those who used a different technique said later that their way prevent such things from happening. So, in spite of being greatly disappointed (understatement) This can be used for a real learning moment to improve in several areas. Final thought: I tried to run above my ability at this point in time, but now I actually see where my present limit. I know that I gave everything I possibly could. This is one thing I love about this sport. So today Ill sit with the crowd and cheer on the excellent fellows I traveled with as they compete in the team events! Hope Ronald McDonald leaves me alone today...
