H329 Somerset Maugham,probably the most successful Hull trawler in the history of deep sea trawling. Built at Beverley in 1961 for her owners,Newington Steam Trawling Co.Ltd.,she won the Silver Cod Trophy four times.This was awarded annually to the British vessel which landed the highest tonnage of fish throughout that year.Her first win was in 1962 under her regular skipper Bill Brettel when she landed a total of 46,557 kits(10 stone or 140lb.) of fish,grossing £146,183 after an incredible 351 days spent at sea.She was sold for scrap by Albert Draper & Sons,Hull in 1978.
