Update to yesterdays posts one of a vehicle fleeing from officers on Cherry St. in which a vehicle then struck a tree and was engulfed in flames on Moseley St and Blackhwawk St. VIA Journal-Standard: FREEPORT — A Freeport man charged with DUI is recovering in a hospital after police say he drove his car into a tree in the 500 block of West Moseley Street late Wednesday. Police said an officer arriving at the scene found the vehicle was on fire and the driver, Jermaine Thurman, 30, was slumped over the center console, unconscious and bleeding from apparent facial and head injuries. Police said tire tracks at the crash site indicate Thurman’s vehicle drove through five residential yards before hitting the tree. The officer pulled Thurman from the vehicle and he was transported to FHN Memorial Hospital by ambulance, and subsequently to Rockford Memorial Hospital by helicopter. Thurman is additionally charged with reckless driving and driving with a revoked license and no valid insurance. The incident is still under investigation and police said further charges are possible. Police said the same officer who responded to the scene attempted to chase Thurman’s vehicle at 10:19 p.m. after observing it run through numerous stop signs in a residential area. However, the officer was unable to get close enough to make a traffic stop and eventually lost sight of the vehicle. Shortly after, a 911 call alerted police to the Moseley Street crash.
