Updates on the Union Station Renovation Project in Downtown Denver! DUSPA banner Denver Union Station Project November 15, 2013 Construction Update Construction activities are weather dependent and the fluctuating conditions may change construction schedules and activities. Regional Bus Facility (LRT to DUS Building) The majority of construction on the transit elements of the Denver Union Station Revitalization Project is nearly complete. Crews are working to finish the bus facility, the commuter rail train hall, and the roads and plaza areas west of the historic building by mid-December. Throughout December and January, crews will be working on punch-list items and in February will complete the remaining track work following Amtraks move out of their temporary station and platform. The Wynkoop Plaza construction activities will also be in progress during this timeframe, in coordination with the construction activities for the hotel and north and south wings of the historic building. For larger images, see the website version of the eNews Name Announced for New Hotel within Denver Union Station In a November 13, 2013 press release, Sage Hospitality announced the name for the new hotel being developed at Denver Union Station. The hotel within the historic building will be called The Crawford Hotel, in honor of Union Station Alliance partner and urban preservationist, Dana Crawford. Dana Crawford is well known in the Denver community for her pioneering involvement in several restoration projects, including Larimer Square and The Oxford Hotel. The Crawford Hotel is scheduled to open summer 2014 and will occupy the upper floors of the north and south wings of the train station. The overall hotel design, created by JG Johnson Architects and Tryba Architects honors the great history of the train station while incorporating modern elegance and luxury. It will feature artwork curated from local Colorado artists by a Denver company, NINE dot ARTS. The stations Great Hall will serve as the hotels lobby and guests will be able to check in to their rooms in advance and access the hotels concierge using their mobile phones. The 112 guest rooms within The Crawford Hotel will represent unique and distinct design elements, with no two rooms being alike. Three design styles have been created for these guest rooms: The Pullman guestrooms on the second level will embrace train travel during its heyday and will reflect a modern take on the glamorous private sleeping cars. The Classic (photo courtesy of Sage Hospitality) The Loft guestrooms, on the uppermost level of the hotel, will embrace the urban characteristics of the Lower Downtown neighborhoods that have evolved around the station, with exposed wood timbers and high vaulted ceilings. Additionally, as part of the partnership between The Crawford Hotel and nearby Oxford Hotel, guests will have access to the Oxford Club, Spa & Salon. Free MallRide will have a New Partner: Free MetroRide A free bus service that will debut in downtown Denver next spring, the Free MetroRide, has officially broken ground and started construction at one of its stops, 17th Street and Lincoln Avenue. The new bus service will complement the Free MallRide that runs along downtown Denvers 16th Street Mall, providing passenger service down 18th and 19th streets between Union Station and Civic Center. In contrast to the 31-year-old 16th Street Free MallRide-which stops on every corner-the new service will stop every two to three blocks during peak hours from 6-9 a.m. and from 3-6 p.m. Free MetroRide (photo courtesy of RTD) The 60-foot articulated buses, or single-deck buses joined by a flexible pivoting point, will feature low floors and three doors for quick passenger loading and unloading. In addition, passengers will be able to identify the buses and bus stops, which will be painted and branded for easy identification to set them apart from other RTD bus routes. Opening Date Announcement for Denver Union Station Bus Complex The Regional Transportation District (RTD) announced that Friday, May 9, 2014 would be the opening date for the Denver Union Station Bus Complex. Opening activities will occur on May 9, and bus service at the new bus terminal will begin on Sunday, May 11. The bus complex includes an interior pedestrian concourse and the future 17th Street pavilion and plaza areas, which will provide a street-level connection between the bus facility and the other transit elements on the site. Shortly following will be the opening of the hotel and retail elements of the historic building. According to Walter Isenberg, President and CEO of Sage Hospitality and member of the Union Station Alliance, work is on schedule to be completed by July 2014. The commuter rail portion of the project is scheduled to open in 2016. As a multimodal transportation hub, Denver Union Station will serve as a major connector to downtown Denver. This RTD FasTracks project integrates bus transit, light rail, commuter rail and Amtrak. RTD expressed its gratitude to the team of contractors that worked together to deliver the project.
