Upon installation it becomes apparent that the desired stair opening space is crossed by a non-standard supporting beam which takes the weight of the pitch roof and entire top floor. This beam runs from front to back of the house. This beam needs to be cut, but the previous owners also removed supporting walls on both ground and first floors, so its already under pressure. The current plasterboard and metal stud wall is of course no longer loadbearing. Its clear that the original builders never intended the attic to be more than a storage space, yet now it is a bedroom with dormer/dakkapel extension. It is necessary to rebuild the supporting wall beside the new stair but first we have to strengthen the existing, weakened floor beams below the stair. Then all the weight can be transferred to the brick walls, through the beam structure. The 35mm beams however take a diagonal detour to avoid a chimney, so this requires some attention. Im not putting that weight on several iron nails which form the original joint. Can we fix it? Yes we can!
