Urgent Electricity Plan Needed In Namibia Namibia could find itself facing a 100 megawatts’ electricity deficit by the year 2015. This is according to the chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Economics, Natural Resources and Public Administration. MP Ben Amadhila says this deficit will further rise to 300 MW, should there be no investment in any energy-generation infrastructure. For the moment Namibia mainly depends on the Ruacana Hydro-power Plant. In addition Namibia spends about N$ 1 billion to import electricity from South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. The MP says that unless a deliberate decision is taken, Namibia’s economy will be negatively affected by electricity shortages, which will have major negative effects on investment, especially in the mining sector, the creation of jobs and Vision 2030.
