Usman Musa Maizare THE EXPERIENCE I HAD AS SUG PRESIDENT - COMR. USMAN MUSA MAIZARE First I want to thank Allah (SWT) who in his infinite mercy sphere my life to see the beginning and the end of my leadership period. I thank Him for the support of my family financially, spiritually and morally. I thank him for my friends, they told me I can when I felt I cant, they encouraged me, they empowered me, they supported me, they believed in me and above all theyve been by my side all through the journey. I thank Him for my colleagues, the worked with me, trusted me, decided with me, accepted me and endured me. I thank Him for my enemies, they criticized me (both constructive and otherwise), made me saw my flaws, made me acted better, made me measure my endurance and made me stronger. All these despite my weakness, mistakes and shortcomings. As the elected president of SUG UDUS from 17th November, 2012 to 31st March, 2014 I must say I had a lot of experience specific to the position I held and the location. This in addition to the wrong informations, allegations and lies libeled against me triggered me to make this little note to make absolute clarification on all major issues from the beginning to the end. MY ACHIEVEMENTS As the 38th SUG president of UDUS Im very satisfied with the achievements weve recorded. They include: (I)We are the most transparent council ever to declare the actual revenue generated. (II)We are able to generate a triple of the average revenue ever generated by SUG of UDUS before our time, approximately N7million (only internally) (III)We put to ground over N5.1million on capital project within our campuses (this has never been done before) (IV)We provided and form a solid foundation for the newest and best SUG in UDUS (V)We embarked on projects closer to the lives of Danfodites about 90% completed. (VI)We struggled in reduction of bus fair from N80 to N50 and N60 respectively (VII)We promote unity among students and structured the union. Among so many others THE LIES AGAINST ME 1- SIXTY THOUSAND NAIRA (N60,000) ALLEGATION. In the month of March, 2013 after the formation of Nigeria Universities Students Association (NUSA) the position of National Vice President (Northwest) was nominated to be the President of SUG UDUS (myself as at then). I felt it to be an honor not only to myself but to the entire students of UDUSOK who participate less or none at all when it comes to National representation of our students. I signed out the above sum to be able to attend the inauguration slated for March 7th, I purchased my ticket but just as I was ready to leave, the program me was postponed to April 17th 2013. Waiting for the rescheduled date to arrive I was invited to Kaduna alongside my Vice Chancellor and ASUU-UDUS Chapter chairman by the National Executive Council of UDUS Alumni to present a paper on the immediate needs of Usmanu Danfodiyo University community; Students Union perspective. The transportation, feeding, paper production and completion was done using the money I couldnt travel with. I DID NOT withdrew a single kobo for this purpose. The program me couldnt hold and ASUU strikes us in July. Within the strike period I was mandated to embark on many official trips that I demanded for no kobo as refund. In the month of october on 15th, I was invited to Kano by the National President of NANS alongside zone A senators and stockholders, I made the trip having in mind the Union has money on me. By December 23th, I alongside all Students leaders across the country were invited by supervising minister of Education to Abuja on issues relating the strike, my fellow patriots all these I demanded for no kobo as refund from my Union thinking the above alleged sum are in my position. In summary I spent over One Hundred thousand naira (N100,000) of my money officially having in mind there are some money with me. After the calling off of the strike, the witch hunt begins. The SRA demanded that I retire the money or provide evidence of expenses, I did but they rejected twice without any inquiry into the evidences I presented before the house. I expected the House to investigate but they didnt instead call press and inform them that Ive EMBEZZLED the stated sum. This is not true and completely base on personal interest and desire. I agree and fully took the responsibility of diverting the sum intended for one thing to another both official but that isnt embezzlement. After the ups and downs, the Dean SAD intervened he attested to the authenticity of all the evidences I presented before the house, insisted that I retire the alleged sum and suggested that I request for refund on all the expenses said to have been en cured. This judgment was not favorable to the personal interest based decision of SRA that Ill get no refund. I did retire the money and after thorough scrutiny I was able to get a refund of SIXTY THREE THOUSAND, FIVE HUNDRED NAIRA (N63,500). Now the question is did they call the press to inform them just as the Hon. Speaker promised? NO! And the reason is simple PERSONAL INTEREST 2- THAT PRESIDENT SOLICITED FOR N450,000. In the month of February, agreement to carry out an orientation prorated by the office of our Protocol director gave the Secretary of the Union a permission to draft solicitation letter. The day I signed the letters was the first day I knew about them and before signing them I called the Director in charged and confirmed. After signing this letter I began to observe an unclean movement within my council. They felt Ive violated a section of the constitution and therefore made a move to suspend me. I was shocked having known fully that base on that particular reason, NO STUDENT can judge me. I have violated a section of University rules independent of our constitution and specifically offended the office of the Dean SAD as stated clearly by 1st article under collection of money in the University page 51 of the students hand book. My fellow compatriots the Students Union constitution begins in page 64 of the same handbook. Now because of the hate and envy of some of my council, this has resulted. This caused a lot of talks but ended with a special meeting where the Dean rightfully point out to them all (EXCO and SRA P-officers) that hes the one offended and so demanded an apology. To my surprise, the work of personal interest come to play again. This was when I felt the depth of envy and hatred theyve for me which till today I cant figure out WHY. My vice president so hungry of power to act in my position! Oops! Theyve forgotten that I was sworn into office by legal practitioner, who gave her Oath to act in my place? Thats the side effect of an incomplete conniving well planned and carried out by those that feel they can do better. Ive state very clear at this juncture that Ive collected NO SINGLE KOBO from anyone for this reason, Allah(SWT) is my immortal and all seeing witness. MY GREATEST CHALLENGE My greatest challenge as president comes at the peak of my leadership, the fact that those officially close to me were convinced into taking a decision that nearly cost us the unity of our dear council which we were able to overcome. Other challenges I faced include the fact that I dont have my own time, the requirement for balance between studies time, personal time and official time. CONCLUSION I most confess that as human, born and breed in Nigeria (above 130th in the most corrupt nations list), in 21st century Im not clean. Im not perfect because perfection is an attribute of Allah (SWT). But the use of campus press men whom make the attack on my image and personality was their main target and objective did not work. The truth will always succeed. I want to use this medium to congratulate the newly appointed CTC and pray to Allah to guide and empower them. I also wish to use this medium to SEEK FOR FORGIVENESS from all DANFODITES for as human being I must have made so many mistakes in my time. Long live SU UDUS Long live UDUSOK Long live Fed. Rep.
