‘Uwantmetokillhim? is a story with a great twist – which I can’t give away – that really draws you in,’ she says. ‘I’m attracted to anything that’s totally different to what I’ve done before.’ That could certainly apply to Filth, the keenly anticipated movie adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s visceral novel that’s released at the end of the month. Froggatt plays James McAvoy’s love interest Mary – not that ‘love interest’ is really the right description for the way Welsh sets about relationships. ‘James’s character is a really bigoted individual and the film is kind of about why he’s turned out the way he has,’ she explains. ‘He starts to have a breakdown and my character is the only one he feels a human connection to. They feel they’re both in pain, that’s how they connect.’ The grime and despair of Welsh’s warts-and-all vision is a world away from Downton but it’s a tribute to Froggatt’s versatility that she slips so easily between the two. She takes pains to state her gratitude to Downton for allowing her the space to explore alternative projects. metro.co.uk/2013/09/10/joanne-froggatt-downton-abbey-let-me-spread-my-acting-wings-3955796/
