VANUATU: I am the grandfather of yams. I offer and eat the first yam on our island every year and then everyone else can go ahead and eat what they harvest. I came to Christ and decided to change the offering date, and make it in a church. I was accused of wrecking our culture but I stuck to my guns. I was threatened with jail but I said go ahead... Now much of the island offers their first fruits in church. One day maybe they all will. Elder Wako Alfred, ex-leader in the John Frum cargo cult on Tanna until he turned to Christ. Now he leads a discipleship effort to win the cultural traditionalists on his island.
