VANUATU UNLUCKY BUT NOT YET OUT Sunday 25 May 2014: Vanuatu have ended a goalless draw with Solomon Islands in their second match of the OFC U19 World Cup Qualifying tournament currently underway in Fiji. The young Black & Golds should have scored in the first half had they kept to their game plan of playing as a team. From the commentary on CFM107, it was clear that the Vanuatu forwards had missed on a series of scoring opportunities because the forwards had tried to dribble past the Solo defence instead of setting up for the other player to score. The Solomon Islanders had lost their first game 0-2 to Papua New Guinea on Friday; And the Vanuatu side who beat a very strong New Caledonian side just by 1 goal on Friday, should have known that their opponents would be looking for a win in their match today. In fact Solomons should have scored also in the first half on one occasion when one of their forwards took advantage of a communication error between a Vanuatu defender and his keeper. Unfortunately he sent the ball outside the post instead of putting it into an empty Vanuatu goal mouth. Meanwhile, Vanuatu are on 4 points from their one win and one draw so far. Fiji beat American Samoa 4-0 on Friday. With PNG and Fiji already on 3 points, and given Vanuatu missing out on their chance of securing their second 3 points today, the door is now open for either of the the teams to take the lead after todayd games. PNG are playing A Samoa now and later on today, Fiji will take on New Caledonia. Since New Caledonia have lost their first match, they will be back today fighting to get 3 points - meaning Fiji may be expecting another tough challenge. For PNG, the road may not be as tough. After todays first match, the standing looks as follows:- Vanuatu on 4 Points; Fiji 3 Points; PNG 3 Points, Solomon Islands 1 Point; New Caledonia 0; A Samoa 0.
