(Stoughton) I spent most of the morning working on my bluebird - TopicsExpress

(Stoughton) I spent most of the morning working on my bluebird trail at Lk Kegonsa SP. Some of the boxes have become overgrown over the years. Invasive trees like Black Locust, Sumac and others take over the open spaces the bluebirds are attracted to. Then wrens and chickadees start to take over. The no mow no cut park policy favors the birds that like shrubby habitat. Im forced to put boxes in the tall grass prairie where bluebirds will nest but then Tree Swallows compete more. I actually removed 5 boxes and moved 6 in hope of improving the chances of attracting bluebirds next spring before competitors arrive. This year I fledged 91 bluebirds which is pretty average for this trail. Better than 74 fledged last year when wrens & coons were trouble. This pic shows a box becoming overgrown. The other is where I relocated it in the prairie. At one stop I actually heard a bluebird call. Made my day!
