Please come join us! veccs.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=138&Itemid=278 ---- November 24, 2014, 9 pm EST - Andre Shih, DVM, DACVAA - How to handle hypotension during anesthesia of the critical patient Session Info: Hypotension is a common occurrence during general anesthesia. It can be an indication of pharmacologically induced vasodilation (drop in systemic vascular resistance), decreased myocardial contractility, decreased stroke volume, sepsis, hemorrhage or hypovolemic shock. If hypotension is persistent it can lead to decrease in tissue perfusion, precipitate anaerobic metabolism, metabolic acidosis and ischemic organ damage (kidney, liver and brain injury). If not treated there may be long term adverse effect. In this webinar we will discuss the importance, causes, and pitfalls of measuring blood pressure, and therapeutic options to treat hypotension during anesthesia. Speaker Info: Dr. Andre Shih graduated in Veterinary Medicine from University of Sao Paulo Brazil in 1999. He moved to the US that year and finished his DVM training at the University of Wisconsin – School Veterinary Medicine Madison. Upon graduation he worked as an Emergency and Critical Care veterinarian in Fox Valley Animal Referral Center WI for a couple of years. He completed his anesthesia residency at the University of Florida and is currently there as an Anesthesia-Associate Professor faculty. Three years ago he started an Emergency Critical Care Fellowship. His area of research includes cardio pulmonary resuscitation and advanced hemodynamic monitoring.
