VERDI - WAGNER CONFERENCE Organized by the International Theatre Institute – Macedonian centre/Euro-Balkan University, Skopje, Republic of Macedonia and the Macedonian Opera and Ballet Skopje, Republic of Macedonia CALL FOR PAPERS This is the year when we celebrate the bicentenary of the births of Richard Wagner and Giuseppe Verdi, these remarkable figures, giants of music history who in their own, personal and ingenious way changed the nature of opera, the ultimate synthesis of music and drama, irreversibly and gave way for a new future for the musical theatre. We now live in this future, an era when the opera they made the way for and its prevalence increasingly become central topics of discourse among scholars, opera performers, theatre makers and opera aficionados equally. Therefore it is a duty and utmost need to constantly provide platform for such deliberations and try to look deeper into their operatic legacy and the way we perceive it, understand it and nurture it today. International Theatre Institute – Macedonian centre/Euro-Balkan University, and the Macedonian Opera and Ballet are pleased to invite you to submit paper proposals for the one-day conference VERDI – WAGNER, to be held in the Macedonian Opera and Ballet, Skopje, Republic of Macedonia on the 19th October 2013. This conference endeavors at broadening the conception of both Verdi’s and Wagner’s operas and their place in today’s musical theatre by investigating and analyzing the influences and the ways their operas have been staged throughout history and the contemporary approaches in opera staging and performance to their original opera works. This conference will welcome a wide range of paper proposals addressing different issues regarding these composers’ opuses; however we particularly encourage studies that focus on the following questions: - How are the modern trends in staging and interpreting opera impacting the experience of their operatic opus and vice versa, - How do the works of the two composers challenge the modern era performers and theatre makers? - Issues of staging their operas with an accent on practical dilemmas on originality, classical approach (tradition) and contemporary trends. Papers may address these and other issues, with an accent of either one of the two composers or on both of them, separately or comparatively. The conference will provide platform for three key speakers, musicians / theatre makers, and 3-6 more speakers whose paper proposals will be selected by the committee.
