VICTORIAN STATE CONFERENCE OF THE ALP UNANIMOUSLY PASSES THE FOLLOWING MOTION PUT TO THE CONFERENCE BY LABOR FOR REFUGEES, TODAY, 18.5.14.... Conference draws the attention of the Leader of the Federal Opposition Bill Shorten and Shadow Minister for Immigration Richard Marles to paragraphs 157 and 160 of chapter 9 of the ALP National Platform as under: • Labor will ensure that asylum seekers who arrive by irregular means will not be punished for their mode of arrival • Protection visa applications made in Australia will be assessed by Australians on Australian territory. Conference further draws their attention to the article by Anna Burke MP, member for Chisholm, published in the Guardian of 26 February 2014 calling for an end to offshore processing, and the speech to Parliament by Melissa Parke MP, member for Fremantle, on 27 March 2014, in which she explained that the prevention of drownings would involve such measures as significantly increasing our humanitarian intake, working with other countries in the region to make conditions safer in transit countries and speeding up the processing of claims. Conference therefore urges the Leader of the Federal Opposition and Shadow Minister for Immigration to adhere to the Party’s platform and to urge the Government to abandon the current practice of sending asylum seekers who arrive in Australia and ask for our protection, to third world countries, such as PNG and Nauru
