VIDEO: Topeka Man Feeling Good Ahead Of 101st Birthday Alex Gardenhire’s felt and seen a lot. He was born in Alma, Kansas, just before the start of the first world war, and he fought in the second. He outlived all his siblings — seven brothers and six sisters to be exact. His wife, Ethel Gardenhire, says he got to 100 by being spiritual and sticking to the good life: no cussin’, drinkin’ or smokin’. His granddaughter, Sabrina Evans, says he’s never worked on Sunday, and that probably helped too. Tomorrow he turns 101. His birthday plans? He’ll be at church, of course, and he’ll drive there himself. Mr. Gardenhire says he’s just fine behind the wheel. His grip’s strong, a sign he still does a lot of things well despite being more than a century old. WIBW Radio’s Bruce Harrison visited Mr. Gardenhire at his home in southwest Topeka.
