VIRTUAL PHILBIBLON ANTHOLOGY !!! Now from the artistic illustrations of the Philobiblon Journal. ... Currently, the exprerssive AND ideatic TANSILVANIAN PHOTOGRAPHER .... IRINA DUMITRAŞCU MĂGUREAN ! Which illustrated. the no. 2 /2011 of the Journal. By one after another... we REPRODUCE each... under the idea: Studies about Confusion and about (versus?) Nature! PART- 3 – Artistic Portfolio – “The artistic portfolio chosen to illustrate the current number of Philobiblon belongs to the young photographer from Cluj, Irina Dumitraşcu, and it is constructed on two different levels: the human and the natural one. The human level shows a twisted universe, dominated by the feeling of lack, loss of identity and confusion, while the natural universe is one of a serene beauty and perfection underlined by the round shape of the photographs. Thus, in the first series entitled “Self Confused,” Irina applies (by digitally processing the image) the technique of the “composite portrait” used in the nineteenth century to identify psychological types, such as the “criminal type” or the main facial features of mental illness. Here, the superposition of different shots of the same person underlines the lack or loss of identity, ranging from the effacement of the self (Inner-sight/inside, 2010), insecurity (Self Confused 3, 2009), confusion (Confusion 2, 2010), to “a paranoid state of mind” (Self Confusion 4, 2009). The other series, the “Untitled Nature” is a projection of the world outside, a positive desire for beauty, serenity and perfection. Applying a perfect geometric shape to nature, which is traditionally associated with disorder, Irina tries to create an equilibrium between the tormented “self” and the surrounding universe. In fact, this “natural world” is entirely constructed, a vision mediated by the “peeping hole”, the sténopé of the camera obscura, by which the chaos of the natural world is tamed and ordered by reason, creating a “positive illusion” (Untitled Landscape 37). Thus, Irina Dumitraşcu’s photographs share with the articles presented in the current number, a general feeling of “Crisis and anomie” and the (im)possibility of transcending it by means of harmony and reason.” Teodora Cosman Irina Dora Dumitraşcu (Măgurean) was born in 1985, in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.
