STORY: Talented primary and secondary school students were awarded with prizes after showcasing their winning entries in the drawing contest which focused on the Millennium Development Goals. The drawing contest awards ceremony titled ‘Laos on Canvas, which was organised by the United Nations and the Department of International Organisations under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was held at the UN office in Vientiane on Tuesday. The contest spanned from April until June with two categories, one for primary school students and another for secondary school students, with the objective to encourage young people to learn more about the Millennium Development Goals and present their ideas in an artistic way. The first prize in the primary school category went to Mr Jamesbond Chalernsouk from Homsavanh Primary School, second prize went to Mr Poutthasinh Sengdala from Sengdala International Bilingual School and equal third prize went to Mr Anoulack Phommachak from SOS Primary School in Xieng Khuang province and Ms Bokham Silamphanh from Phonsa-ath Primary School in Xieng Khuang province. According to United Nation Resident Coordinator Kaarina Immonen , contests such as this one had a role to play in ensuring that we continued to focus our attention on achieving the Millennium Development Goals. With less than eighteen months to go before the deadline for achieving the goals, much remains to be done to ensure that Laos delivers on meeting the targets set. The UN will continue to work with the government of Laos and development partners in an effort to make this happen but the support of the public is essential to be successful, she added
