VOSS by Patrick White. Chapter-1. Mr. Johann Ulrich Voss, a German student of botany,left his research in the subject in his own country and comes to Australia to explore the mysterious land with his own eyes. He first comes to the house of Mr. Bonner ,a merchant,-- and meets Laura Trevelyan, the daughter to Mr. Bonners dead sister. After the first meeting,both Voss and Laura were attracted to each other on ground of some common points between themselves : each is isolated, each is eccentric,each lean and thin, each introvert, only in contrast Voss is physically very strong with hot body temperature.Laura is weak and cold.But they two are dissimilar from another standpoint. Voss is outside any social bond,while Laura is a part of the superficial, money-minded and conservative Victorian society. Voss has left his parents much to the sorrow of the latters to the expedition; Laura is sorry that she has lost her parents so early. Initially Laura feels a kind of compassion for this man who has planned to willingly court danger through his expedition.
