VSJ stands in solidarity with the Dalit community of Mirchpur, Haryana where more than 27 houses belonging to Dalits were torched by Dominant Caste Jatts. The massive gathering of around 20,000 people from Punjab led by VSJ-DDVA protest in front of the Parliament of India. President, DDVA, Jai Singh Phillaur, today said, “Several members of the upper caste community of the village, which falls in Hisar district, torched over 27 houses belonging to the Dalits on April 21 but, so far, the state government has failed to take any action against the culprits.” Phillaur further stated that they had decided that as many as 20,000 Dalits from Punjab, led by the DDVA, would participate in the May 20 protest outside Parliament. Besides demanding action against Hisar SSP and the DC, the DDVA leaders demanded registration of a case against the Naib Tehsildar and cops, allegedly present at the time of the incident, under Section 120-B of the IPC. Phillaur further claimed that though the Dalits had informed the police well in time about the threats being held out by a group of villagers from the upper caste, still the unfortunate incident occurred. “The Naib Tehsildar, the SHO concerned and two dozen cops were present at the time of the incident, but still the culprits were not stopped from committing the crime,” he alleged. Phillaur said, “From Punjab, the protesters will leave for New Delhi on May 19,” adding that the Dalit community was ready for a long battle and would not tolerate atrocities at the hands of the Khap Panchayats or upper-caste people.
