Dear everyone: You may be annoyed at the Federal government - TopicsExpress

Dear everyone: You may be annoyed at the Federal government dictating local educational policy, and I can respect that. You may dislike the general trend of constant high-stakes testing and feel like CC will just contribute to it, and believe me, Im with you there. But please dont extend your anger to some very reasonable approaches to mathematics that also happen to be a part of many Common Core curricula. The number of people I meet, of all ages, who say to me I was never any good at math tells me that the argument that traditional ways of teaching math totally worked and we should never change them is nonsense. Im sure there are poorly written math texts in the world. Im sure many of them are in elementary schools right now. But please understand that lining up numbers in columns and doing the operation is not the only way to do arithmetic. And many of those alternative approaches are really helpful in developing students understanding, so when it comes time for them to learn the standard algorithm (which, btw, CC calls for as part of its standards), theyll understand and gain fluency and speed in it much more easily.
