The ghost workers, according to the county government audit, have drawn salaries from the exchequer for more than ten years without offering any services to the public. Deputy Governor Gabriel Lagat said the workers have been irregularly earning salaries for more than 10 years without offering any services to the public. Lagat said the medics, among them nurses, clinical officers and lab technicians have not been seen at their place of work since being hired by the national government, terming the trend unfortunate. He said the audit has revealed that some of the doctors had not even set foot to in the county yet they have been receiving monthly salaries. “We have notified the ministry of health and it is now upon them to establish the whereabouts of this ghost workers and institute necessary legal action against them,” said Lagat. He said some of the ghost workers who include doctors retired more than five years ago and yet they were still receiving their monthly salaries. Lagat said his government has ordered the immediate cancellation of salaries of all the ghost workers and will soon advertise for the vacant posts. Speaking in Iten yesterday, Lagat said the national government has been losing millions of shillings to ghost workers in almost all public sectors. “Most counties have unearthed these irregularities, the trend is worrying,” said Lagat. - By WINSTONE CHISEREMI
