Van Gaal provides team news for Boxing Day Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal does not believe any injured players will return for the Boxing Day encounter with Newcastle, although Chris Smalling “maybe” has a chance of featuring. The England international suffered an injury in the first half of the Reds’ 2-1 win over Southampton on 8 December and subsequently missed the following matches with Liverpool and Aston Villa in the Barclays Premier League. Luke Shaw has not played since sustaining ankle ligament damage against Arsenal in late November, while Ander Herrera picked up a slight injury before the trip to Villa Park. Marouane Fellaini is also suffering from a bout of illness and will not face the Magpies. Asked by MUTV if any of United’s absentees might return to action, van Gaal said: “I dont think so, I am sorry. Maybe Smalling. Fellaini is still not available. Smalling is a question mark - I have to look tomorrow but its always like that, he continued at a press conference. For a few players it [this period] is fun because they are recovering quickly, but you also have players who are not recovering so quickly, so I have to rotate. My problem is I have a lot of injured players. That is the problem with these matches in the coming weeks.
