Varda, here’s a piece by American composer Edward MacDowell - TopicsExpress

Varda, here’s a piece by American composer Edward MacDowell (1860-1908): “To a Wild Rose” from his “Woodland Sketches.” The piece is a favorite of teachers and students for its simplicity, and lack of technical hurdles. The Main theme is made up of straightforward four-measure phrases and eight-measure periods expressing a sense of innocence and simplicity, though there are subtle dissonances to the harmony in the return of the theme which the performer can bring out to create a sense of mystery and wonder. Later in the return of the B-theme, there is a subtle countermelody in the upper voice of the left hand (1:37) which is “slightly marked” on paper, which most performers shade with the damper pedal, though this can blur the sound to much if overdone. BTW, that’s Van Gogh’s “Wild Roses” (1890) in the picture--a nice complement to the piece. Enjoy, and Shabbat Shalom!
