(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis on Friday met with the President of Malta, George Abela. According to a statement released by the Holy See Press Office, the two men spoke about the deep mark of Christianity in the history, culture, and life of the Maltese people, as well as the good relations between the Holy See and Malta. They also spoke about the pastoral visits of Popes Blessed John Paul II and Benedict XVI. They made reference to the contribution of the Catholic Church in education and welfare, as well as to a recently concluded agreement between the Holy See and Malta aiming at a fruitful cooperation in the service of the common good. In conclusion, there was a discussion on the contribution of Malta in the European Union, as well as certain situations in the Mediterranean region, and the issue of migration to Europe, which involves both the Church and government.
