Vatra-conference on anti-trafficking 24 October 2014, Vlora Last Friday, 24 October 2014, an anti-trafficking conference was held in Vlora. The conference marked an end to a week dedicated to increase awareness about trafficking and domestic violence, and to step up the fight against these problems. In Vlora, the organization Vatra celebrated its 15th anniversary, and received much praise from the high ranking guests at the conference. For its dedicated staff, and all their hard work during these 15 years that has saved many women from horrible conditions. Head of development at the Swedish Embassy Ms. Lisa Fredriksson talked about Sweden’s support for the work of women’s organisations in Albania for many years in her speech, including a long-term successful cooperation with Vatra through the Swedish organization Kvinna till Kvinna. “We strongly believe that the role these organizations play is vital for the increased respect for human rights and in particular women’s right in Albania.” In her speech, Ms. Fredriksson also stated that “it is unacceptable that human beings are bought and exploited like merchandise, and we must combine forces and use all available means, at the national and the international level, to put an end to this trade”. Vlora, a symbol of beauty for the country, a symbol of the anti-trafficking work that started due to the severity of the phenomenon right here, is today a symbol of hope for a new mentality and a new perspective.
