Venezuelas Senator Mary Landrieu Uses Clout to Squash Pro-Democracy Demonstrations (BATON ROUGE) - Yesterday, POLITICO uncovered emails showing Senator Landrieu used her clout to block legislation to place sanctions on Venezuela in response to their gross human rights violations against pro-Democracy protestors. Senator Landrieu did so, possibly at the behest of big time Washington lobbying firms, even after assurances that this narrowly crafted legislation would have no impact on Louisiana jobs. POLITICO reports the sanctions were narrowly written and would not have affected Louisiana’s energy industry: “No need for Senator Landrieu to be concerned about any implications for refineries in Louisiana,” wrote one staffer. “The scope of [the bill] is very narrow. It focuses on individuals that have committed human rights abuses against protesters in the past 6 months, has unlawfully jailed protesters, or supported either of those first two provisions.” Venezuela has horrible record on human rights and is currently cracking down on peaceful pro-Democracy protestors. Senator Landrieu is so eager to convince Louisianans that she has clout, that she is siding with Venezuela and their Washington lobbyists instead of standing up for Democracy. Maybe if Senator Landrieus buddy Harry Reid didnt block a vote on the Keystone XL Pipeline, she would not need to buddy up with countries that openly hate America to prove her effectiveness.
