Vermont is set to become the first state to require that GMO foods are labeled -- but Monsanto is about to fire back and sue them. Let’s stop Monsanto before it can get started. Monsanto is about to sue the state of Vermont. Vermont is set to make history by becoming the first state in the country to require genetically modified (GMO) food to be labeled. But Monsanto, the world’s largest GMO producer, is gearing up to sue the state. This is an important fight, not just for Vermont, but for everyone in the country: 25 other states are considering similar labeling laws, but are waiting for someone else to take the leap before their own laws go into effect. If Vermont wins, it might not be long until the entire country mandates GMO labeling, giving consumers the information to make their own choices. We can’t let Vermont lose this battle. Let’s stop Monsanto before it can even get started: Tell Monsanto: Dont sue Vermont for its decision to label GMO foods. Monsanto is making outlandish claims in protest, including one that a labeling requirement would be a violation to the company’s freedom of speech. Its ready to put its corporate muscles to work to thump the states decision, just as it has before: It recently successfully conspired with DuPont and Kraft Foods to grossly outspend and defeat supporters of similar laws in California and Washington. Theres lots of discussion about what the long-term effects of GMOs might be, but one thing should be above debate: Consumers should have the right to know what theyre eating and what theyre feeding their kids. Monsanto: We won’t let you sue Vermont. The SumOfUs community is fighting against Monsantos power on many fronts. In January, thousands of us chipped in so we could buy a small, strategic stake in Monsanto, enabling us to speak out as shareholders ourselves. At Monsantos shareholder meeting, we demanded that Monsanto publish a risk assessment of its GMO business -- and we got incredible press, putting serious pressure on the bio-tech giant to change its ways. Now, were gearing up to battle Monsanto in Canada in order to ensure Monsanto isnt given long-term patent rights over seeds. Stopping Monsantos lawsuit against Vermont would be another blow to Monsantos hold over our food system. Labeling is a crucial step in making sure we know what were eating -- let’s take it. Thanks for taking action, Paul, Hanna, Angus and the rest of us action.sumofus.org/a/monsanto-sues-vermonts/?akid=5559.2394100.S5YIlG&rd=1&sub=fwd&t=3
