Vernon Jay Morris Williams THEO 201 – Liberty University – Week 2 Bibliology: Inspiration and Inerrancy of the Bible According to the Evangelical Dictionary of Theology (Second Edition) Pg. 157, the book of John 10:34-35 Jesus says that Scripture cannot be broken and so is absolutely binding. The very fact that the scriptures are God breathed alone implies that the bible has authority in its entirety. Many scriptures are used in the bible that support this fact, one being Matthew 5:17-20. 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16-17) This one scripture alone completely covers what inspiration is and also what is does for the believer. As believers we are moved to Live in Victory Everyday and this is solely based on the inspiration that the bible provides. The definition of Inerrancy is the view that when all the facts become known they will demonstrate the Bible in its original autographs and correctly interpreted is entirely true and never false in all it affirms, whether that relates to doctrine or ethics or to the social, physical, or life sciences. Overall I would use “The Biblical Argument” because it gives us a clear understanding that the scriptures are God breathed and when we are in line with the word of God, every word shall be fulfilled. Pg. 157 speaks about the Prophets and how the words of a prophet are oral but are recorded in the Bible and is also Gods way of divinely communicating with his children. I would have to question ones faith if they were totally relying on all the facts and data that have the potential to never be revealed and or found. The Bible says that we walk by faith and not by site, so for one to say that they have faith but in the same breath say that they are waiting on more facts and data to be all in one hundred percent is a contradiction to the previously stated. There is no “when or if” when it comes to our faith, point blank period. The statement, “it was assumed rather than defended” on pg. 158 speaks volumes as the word assumed clearly says that it may not be the truth or the facts, wow. In the very next paragraph Augustine writes, “I have learned to yield this respect and honor only to the canonical books of scripture: of these alone do I most firmly believe that the authors were completely free from error.” It would be clear to say that he understands that in the leading of the Holy Spirit through inspiration, there can be no error. In the very next paragraph Luther says this: “I am ready to trust them only when the prove their opinions from scripture.” It is clear to see that the Biblical and Historical Argument is by far my choice when defending how I feel. How can one deny the facts and the truth as the bible provides both, even without the extra data? The strongest argument would have to be the Bible Argument as it was written by man but inspired by the Holy Spirit. The relationship between Inerrancy and inspiration is that both require one to search out the scriptures. Overall, the relationship between the both is that both require one to believe in God. The only difference one requires more facts and data while the other is inspired or should I say “trusting solely in the Holy Spirit with no need for more facts or data. One can imply that when it comes to the Authority of the Bible, no one has ever been able to prove the contents within it to be false or incorrect. The very fact that all scripture is being fulfilled now and will continue to be fulfilled says enough. For one to write out detailed accounts of the things that have taken place over two thousand years ago as well as foretell the things to come is a clear indication that the writers were inspired by the Holy Spirit, for those that believe that is. Those who rely solely on inerrancy seem not to understand the power of the Holy Spirit and the authority that lies within it. The bible says in John 4:15-17 15.If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. 16. I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; 17. that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.
