Very Interesting. I picked up on the point in the article about signalling. As I understand it, its the little clues that potential employers pick up on to determine potential productivity. Education and certification choices are a prime example to me. In the U.S. it can be reasonably argued that its not only important what you study, its important where you study. And this point is as much about the reputation of the school as it is about the quality of education. Hiring officials make this determination all the time. Its one reason why someone might choose Harvard, Stanford, or a Service Academy (if possible) instead of a lesser known school. Certifications are in the same boat. A candidate might have the exact work experience that is needed, but another candidate stands out above because they have that recognized certification. Both candidates might have the same experience or the candidate without the certification might be the more productive employee. However the signal that stands out is the certification or where someone went to school. With this perspective in mind, the choices we make for what we study, where we go to school, what certifications we decide to obtain are really Cost/Benefit & investment decisions. These decisions not only have an effect on if we get the job, but also have a very real impact on how much we can negotiate in compensation discussions.
