Very proud of Bec, great write up and picture online Allblacks and ONSIDE ONLINE Magazine 04 DEC 2014 GETTYIMAGES.COM Former Black Fern and World Champion Rebecca Mahoney is the latest first class player to extend her involvement with the game and take up refereeing. Mahoney was part of the Black Ferns from 2004 to 2011, including two Women’s Rugby World Cup-winning campaigns in 2006 and 2010. The first five-eighth has played provincial rugby for Manawatu, Hawke’s Bay and Wellington and was a key member of Manawatu’s Women’s Provincial Championship side in 2013 and 2014. Her move to refereeing follows in the path established by recently retired referee Nicky Inwood, who was also a former Black Fern and that taken by Super Rugby players Glen Jackson and Jamie Nutbrown. While NZR is confident that the traditional referee development pathways are still delivering fantastic refereeing talent, it’s useful when recent top-level players make the switch because of their great rugby understanding and experience of the fitness required to play 80 minutes at a high level. Mahoney expressed an interest in refereeing in 2013 and following a series of conversations with experienced refs and NZR Community Refereeing Manager Trevor Howard, the Ekatahuna club member committed to refereeing club rugby for Wairarapa Bush in 2014. Her performances in the middle so far have seen her named as part of the panel to referee women’s sevens, including the recent Women’s Sevens Series and the Central Regional Sevens and has been selected to officiate at the National Sevens, coming up in January 2015 in Rotorua. As part of her development, Mahoney will be involved in the Women’s Referee Squad camp in March, has had an activity plan mapped out and has started working with respected referee coach Harry Quinn, who is based in the Wairarapa. She will continue to be monitored and supported by NZR to ensure that her potential is realised and that she is given the skills specific to refereeing to complement her already impressive rugby ability.
