Very sad day yesterday - in Ann Arbor, MI, attending the Requiem Mass for Father Gary Fertig, our recently-retired Rector of Ascension Parish in Chicago. Father died after a brief but grave illness at the much-too-young age of 62. As Fr. Sean Mullen, Rector of St. Marks, Phila. said during his homily, Gary was a priests priest, and a master of every part of the priest-craft so often missing in the Church today. He knew what to do in every situation and he knew why he needed to do it. And even though he was not necessarily known for his ministry with children, as Chaplain to the [St. Thomas, Fifth Avenue - New York City] Choir School, he was terrific with young people. May his soul and the souls of all the +Faithful Departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Go with God, Father - and pray for us.
