Veteran status available on driver’s license BOSTON (MassDOT) – Today, MassDOT Registrar of Motor Vehicles Celia J. Blue announced 30,000 Massachusetts veterans have elected to add the Veterans Indicator to their driver license and ID cards since the feature became available in 2012. “The Registry is pleased that we have reached 30,000 veterans across the Commonwealth,” said Registrar Blue. “When we reflect on the sacrifices made by our veterans, we are proud to join our colleagues across government to raise awareness and to make sure our men and women are receiving all the benefits afforded to them.” The “Veteran” indicator or designation is designed to increase awareness about available resources and benefits. The feature will provide valuable information to first responders and will help the Department of Veterans’ Services notify veterans of benefits they are eligible to receive. “Massachusetts is the national leader in veterans’ services,” said Department of Veterans’ Services Secretary Coleman Nee. “Working with MassDOT, the Registry and other state agencies we are able to maximize our resources in order to identify veterans and provide enhanced outreach efforts to ensure veterans and their families have the knowledge and access to the finest benefits in the country.” The Registry encourages veterans to add the indicator when it is time to renew at a branch office. There is no additional cost for the “Veteran” designation, as long as it is added during an individual’s license renewal process. Standard license renewal and duplication fees apply. Over the past decade, motorcycle and passenger vehicle Veterans license plates have provided more than $6 million for the operation of the Soldiers’ Homes in Holyoke and Chelsea that is under the purview of the Executive Office of Health and Human Services. On Saturday, November 15, Acting MassDOT Secretary & CEO Frank DePaola will rededicate the Callahan Tunnel that carries traffic from Downtown to East Boston and Logan Airport in honor of Lt. William F. Callahan Jr., a Newton soldier killed in the final days of World War II. MassDOT will unveil a memorial to the soldier which will also mark the rehabilitation of the Callahan.
