In reality, the virus was first reported on Hawaii in 1945 and it was not until 1998 that the transgenic papaya was released. In fact, the variant that infects papayas originated 500 years ago in Asia coinciding with the introduction of papayas in China and India. Roseanne Barr has an intellectual responsibility to not use her fame to spread dangerous pseudoscience."
