Victims and survivors of domestic violence, their advocates and those who join in the effort to stop the violence join together this October, as another Domestic Violence Awareness Month rolls around. October is recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month around the country by advocates, victim service providers, law enforcement, the judiciary, prosecutors and survivors to raise public awareness about domestic violence. In recognition of the same, the Yuma County Attorney’s Office in conjunction with the Yuma County Victim’s Rights Committee and The Healing Journey will sponsor a Domestic Violence Vigil, October 16, 2014 at West Wetlands Park, Ramada # 32. The vigil will begin at 5:30 PM and is expected to end at 7:00 PM. The community is invited to attend. The theme for this Day of Unity is “Stand Up, Speak Out - Against Domestic Violence.” “It invites us as a community to recognize the need for all to step up and support not only those who are victims of domestic violence but also those who support and advocate for victims of domestic violence. We unite to end the abuse once and for all,” stated Estrella Fitch, this year’s Chairperson for the DV Subcommittee of the Yuma County Victims’ Rights Committee, and Executive Director for The Healing Journey. Ms. Fitch elaborated, “It’s clear that domestic violence affects everyone and, consequently, everyone really needs to be part of the solution.” At this year’s vigil, Jon R. Smith, County Attorney, will provide both welcoming and closing remarks. Gregory S. Ferguson, Yuma County Supervisor, District 5 and Chairman of the Board of Supervisors will deliver a proclamation made by him earlier this month. Two survivors, one a former Marine and the other a published author on the subject, will share the experience they suffered as a victim of abuse and the journey they took to end the abuse and not only survive, but thrive. Music will be provided by Oscar Chavez. There will be a symbolic balloon release and candlelight vigil. Information displays and packets will also be on hand as provided by the various victim support groups in Yuma County. All members of our community are invited to join us in the effort to end Domestic Violence.
