#Victorian #London was a city of striking contrasts. The construction of new public buildings and beautiful new residential wealthy acted as opposed to the horrible and overcrowded #slums of the capital where the people lived in often inhumane conditions. The population passed during the nineteenth century, from about 1 million in 1800 to over 6 million a century later. This growth far exceeded the ability of London to meet the basic needs of its citizens. A combination of #coal and stoves along with a non-existent #sewerage system meant that the citys air was constantly heavy and smelly.
