Carbone, Ed.D., BCBA-D highlights five markers which may indicate the development of an autism spectrum disorder and/or other developmental delay or disorder: (1) Failure to develop the skill of joint attention. By one-year of age children typically share with parents and others interesting events and activities in the environment. (2) Delay in development of language. (3) Exhibition of repetitive sort of behaviors, like playing with toys in unusual or repetitive ways with the same pattern over and over again and not doing creative or unique things with the toy. (4) Repetition of the same sounds and words over and over again (vocal stereotypies). (5) Repetition of same body movements in the form of rocking and unusual motor movements (motor stereotypies).
