Video: Dem State Senator Supports Welfare for Illegal Immigrants First known state lawmaker to back Rep. Michauds position on welfare for illegals AUGUSTA -- The Maine Republican Party on Monday released a video recording of Democratic State Senator Eloise Vitelli (D-Sagadahoc) stating she supports the state paying welfare benefits to illegal immigrants. The video was taken at a recent town hall forum where a voter asked Sen. Vitelli whether she supports providing taxpayer-funded benefits to illegal immigrants. The video can be viewed here: https://youtube/watch?v=i_3SXQHUHok This represents a disturbing trend of liberal politicians expressing a willingness to allocate scarce welfare dollars away from needy Maine citizens and beleaguered Maine taxpayers in order to provide welfare benefits to people who are here illegally, said Maine Republican Party Chairman Richard Bennett. Republicans support the responsible use of taxpayer dollars to help Maine citizens who are truly in need, especially seniors, disabled people, children, and single mothers. In the video, Sen. Vitelli is asked whether she supports taxpayer dollars being spent to support illegal immigrants. In response, Sen. Vitelli expresses confusion at the question, apparently in an attempt to buy time to formulate an answer. Sen. Vitelli then attempts to alter the voters question into one strictly about asylum seekers, but the voter doesnt take the bait and Vitelli nods in understanding before replying with a simple yes. Sen. Vitellis answer is clear in the face of repeated questions about her willingness to support welfare for illegal immigrants. Its clear that up and down the ticket, from gubernatorial candidate Michael Michaud to State Senator Vitelli, Maine Democrats are out of touch with voters on the issues of welfare reform and immigration policy, added Chairman Bennett. Maines welfare system is broken and Gov. Paul LePage is fixing it, but the job is not done yet. We must continue on Gov. LePages path of welfare reform if Maine is to prioritize its tax dollars and break the cycle of inter-generational welfare dependency. In June, U.S. Rep. Michael Michaud stated that he believes Maine cities and towns should continue providing welfare benefits to illegal immigrants. Gov. LePage, meanwhile, has implemented a policy withholding state welfare money from cities and towns who do not certify in writing that they are not seeking reimbursement for non-qualified individuals. ###
