Video pick of the day. Shoukichi Kina is a legendary Japanese musician, born in Okinawa in 1948. He is a multi- instumentalist, but mostly known to play the Shamisen, a traditional Japanese instrument. Its a three string, fretless banjo, for lack of a better description. He formed a band called Champloose in 1968, who have been described as Japans first garage rock band. A live recording from Kinas own club in 1977 was discovered and released in North America in 1991 under the title Music Power From Okinawa. It contained many great songs including the first song he ever wrote called Haisai Ojisan, later to be covered by French, Frith, Kaiser, and Thompson. His 1980 album Bloodline featured Ry Cooder on a number of songs. He released many albums through the 80s and 90s, eventually slowing down to focus on environmental concerns and a political career. Kina was elected to the Japanese parliaments House of Councillors in 2004. Enjoy this track from Bloodline, Jing Jing (remember this one Bubbeh?). WARNING, its catchy as hel! youtu.be/zBMNHel17Pw
