Washington, DC 20500 Dear Mr. President, Vietnam Veterans of America believes that bold action is critical to the resolution of the current crisis in health care for veterans. While we are most appreciative of the efforts by Secretary Shinseki and of Deputy White House Chief of Staff Rob Nabors, we believe there are immediate actions that you, as Commander in Chief, could take that will contribute to restoring the faith of our veterans and fellow citizens in the efficacy of the VA medical system. The problems encountered throughout the VA system boil down to the number of available clinicians and the effective/efficient use of clinical resources. The time for action is now. Accountability can and should happen after we are certain that clinical assessments are being done correctly for our veterans, and we are on a path toward a more permanent solution to addressing the shortfalls in access to clinical care. VVA believes that the clinical care provided by VA ranges from “generally good” to “very good,” and is often excellent. However, dramatic reform is needed in the corporate culture of the VA, and specifically within the Veterans Health Administration. We look forward to working with you and with the Congress as we move rapidly forward to resolve the access and accountability issues. We offer our “Immediate Action Recommendations” in that spirit. Sincerely, John Rowan National President/CEO
