View from Canada Qamar Jawaid The Blissful Feel of Democracy The most academic definition of democracy is that it is the government of the people by the people for the people. Being in Canada I had the first hand brush with working democracy and I realized what does really it means. No wonder that Canada is said to be finest state on most counts. Only one can realize when one has brush with people and its system. One does not see government anywhere but it is everywhere because citizen is law abiding. May it be parliamentary elections, Mayoral elections or councilor’s elections one never feels how it’s happening. It is such a thing that it is happening yet if do not want to be in it than as if nothing is happening. Being curious I tried to find out than it is very much there. This is blissful touch. It is normal like others chores. The candidates approach is most gentle and least bothering. Electorate is normally introduced and campaigned through television and radio. On appointed times one can watch debates on issues only and budgetary proposals. Most debates are on positive issues like how to generate more jobs, economy, health care, transits facilities and most important is providing affordable housing. Security is such that as if no such as individual security is an issue at all. The leaders of parties, mayors, councilors and members parliament always are accessible. Transparency is no issue. Everything is available on computer. Bureaucracy is such that hardly any normal citizen comes into contact. There are most people, Canadians who have never seen any bureaucrat in their life time. But they are there if one wants to meet but it is never more than a courtesy call. My very small personal experience as journalist really made me elated when little bit I indulged in Mayor Elections of Mississauga. It was the most impressive impressionable experience. It was so serene that experience of back home seems that there times are stopped and it is still primitive times. The young mother of city, ninety three years old Lady Hazel McCall ion, the legendary mother figure, after serving city for uninterrupted tenure of thirty three years herself retires and supported a younger lady Bonnie Crombie who resigned from parliament and got elected as mayor. This all happenings of elections were like picnicking rather than any sort of hassle. Speeches were in a very peaceful environment in city halls. In short elections in working democracy are part of enjoyable life not a question of life and death as in sub continent. To attend political meeting is like attending some educational seminar. If one wants to get involved one is so cordially welcomed as if one is joining a club of educated people. It is a respectable venture. One really feels to serve. I personally, view wise; inclined to Liberal Party whose leader is young Justin Trudeau who has a legacy of famous legendry leader, his Pierre Trudeau. I think time is for liberals and I will work with that party. I end this on note that democracy here is the fragrance of rose for liberty equality and prosperity.
