View yesterday’s fire behavior on the Avocado Creek wildfire in Everglades National Park in the video below. Notice how this fire made short wind-driven advances in the Sawgrass Prairie (olive green vegetation), but then slowed as the flames made contact with less the flammable Mangrove Forest (bright green vegetation). Fires in the Everglades typically burn in patchy mosaic patterns creating areas of burned and unburned vegetation. Animals are able to escape the fire by burrowing into wet soils, flying, or running away. These same animals will benefit later from improved habitat, increased forage and food sources in areas burned by the fire.
